Health Crisis Unfolds: Nationwide Salmonella Outbreak Traced to Cantaloupes
A widespread Salmonella outbreak related to cantaloupes has led to grave concerns across 32 states, resulting in two reported fatalities and hospitalization of 45 individuals, as confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The outbreak investigation has prompted recalls of cantaloupes from various brands, including those sold at Aldi, as authorities collaborate between the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to contain the situation.
Consumers, businesses, and restaurants are advised to inspect their cantaloupes for any recall notices. Those in possession of recalled cantaloupes or uncertain about their status are urged to discard them immediately and sanitize any surfaces that might have come into contact.
The CDC reported 99 cases of illness and 45 hospitalizations tied to the Salmonella outbreak, along with two confirmed deaths. The latest illness was documented on November 10, although it’s important to note that determining connections to an outbreak can take up to three to four weeks.

The health officials have expanded warnings, cautioning against consuming specific cantaloupe brands sold in various stores, as 18 additional illnesses have been reported recently in connection to the ongoing outbreak. Notably, pre-cut cantaloupes from major grocery chains such as Kroger, Trader Joe’s, and Sprouts Farmers Market have been included in the recall list.
The CDC strongly advises against purchasing or consuming pre-cut cantaloupes from specific retailers like Aldi, Kwik Trip, Freshness Guaranteed, RaceTrac, Vinyard, and Bix Produce. Additionally, individuals are warned against whole cantaloupes from Malichita or Rudy brands if the source is unidentified.
To ensure safety, the CDC recommends washing anything that might have come into contact with the recalled fruit. Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, with symptoms typically manifesting within six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria.
Health Alert: Multiple Cantaloupe Brands Recall Produce Amidst Safety Worries
Several brands have recalled cantaloupes, including Pacific Trellis Fruit/Dulcinea Farms, CF Dallas LLC, Sofia Produce LLC (Trufresh), Aldi, and Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company. These recalls encompass various types of fresh-cut or whole cantaloupes distributed between specific dates.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include prolonged diarrhea, fever exceeding 102 degrees Fahrenheit, severe vomiting leading to dehydration, stomach cramps, and dizziness upon standing. The CDC advises seeking medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen beyond a few days.
Salmonella symptoms include:
- Bloody diarrhea or diarrhea that lasts more than three days without improving
- Diarrhea and fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit
- Excessive vomiting, especially if it prevents you from keeping liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, including dry mouth and throat, infrequent peeing and feeling dizzy when standing up
- Stomach cramps

Symptoms usually start 6 hours to 6 days after swallowing the bacteria, says the CDC. Most people recover without treatment after 4 to 7 days. The CDC recommends getting in touch with a healthcare provider if symptoms persist or get worse.
